The British Columbia logging museum on Vancouver Island has a 1959 Kenworth logging truck in its collection. The retired loggers who run the museum – grey-haired and great-bellied men – have put a lot of care into restoring the old equipment. Most of it has been repainted in loud primary colours and the various pieces look a bit like the toys I used to play with as a child. But they left the old truck alone – it’s not considered an antique yet. And so it’s a bit rusty and it has a few holes and punched out bits. But this was the vehicle which opened up the Canadian forest and it’s there where you’ll see most of the lads gathered with their grandfathers poking around and telling stories. We don’t actually need to dress up the past. You and I are built for work, for love and for sacrifice. What we manage to preserve intact at the end of our days isn’t actually worth looking at for very long.
